
What is Amblyopia?
Amblyopia is a decrease in vision development that happens when the brain does not get normal stimulation from the eye
It develops when there’s a breakdown in how the brain and the eye work together, and the brain can’t recognize the sight from 1 eye.
National Eye Institute estimates 4.5 million children with preventable vision loss have amblyopia
Why should children get their vision screened?
According to the WHO, 80% of all visual impairment can be prevented or cured
19 million children worldwide are visually impaired
Amblyopia, more commonly known as lazy eye, is the #1 cause of preventable, yet permanent, vision loss in children in the USA
Amblyopia must be identified by age 8 to obtain the best treatment outcomes (time sensitive)
As many as 1 in 20 children can only see out of one eye
Healthy eyes are important to a child’s development and education. Vision loss can also limit career opportunities as an adult.
When should my child get screened?
Repeat every one to two years
Vision screening is as much a priority as checking height and weight, or discussing nutrition, oral health, safety, and vaccinations.
